For decades, Moscow tried to appropriate the history of Chernihiv: declaring it “its Old Russian city”, exaggerating its own influence, erasing the Cossack period and destroying the Ukrainian character of the region. The same thing happened again in 2022, when Chernihiv came under the blow of the Russian invasion.
