Movements may be slow or rapid. Air, water and other agents do not play a role, its just gravity. Weathering is not a prerequisite for mass movements though it aids mass movements. Mass movements do not come under erosion. Gravity is greater than Resistance b/w rocks. Causes = Gradient increase, Overloading, Lubrication of supportdue to rainfall, removal of material or load, Earthquakes, excessiveNatural seepage, removal of natural vegetation. Heave: soil breakage due to upward swelling of soil during freezing conditions caused by increasing presence of ice as it grows towards surface. Slow movements : Soil Creep – gradual but more or less continuous movement of soil downmoderately steep soil covered hill slopes. Common in damp soils where water acts as a lubricant. Solifuction: Slow flowing soil mass or fine grained rock debris downslope saturated or lubricated with water. Common in moist temperate areas where surface melting of deeply frozen ground & longcontinued rain occur frequently. Soil acts like a liquid. In Ireland such flows are called bog – bursts. Rapid movements : Humid conditions . Gentle to steep slopes Earthflow: Movement of water saturated clayey or silty earth materials downLow angle terraces or hill sides. Mudflow : Caused by Vegetation cover scarcity, Heavy rainfall, Thick layers of weathered materials get saturated with water flow downwards either slowly or rapidly. Debris Avalanche : Steep slopes , faster than mudflow, Similar to snow avalanche My recording equipment: MacBook: https://www.apple.com/in/macbook-air/ #GCleonggeography #NCERTGeographyExplanation #geographylectureforias #IAS #Studyforcivilservices #UPSC #IASmotivationalvideo #Geography #IndianGeography #UPSClecture #UPSCpreparation #WifistudyUPSC #UPSCmotivationalvideos #iasmotivation #geographyforUPSC #IASpreparation #geographyUPSC #IAScoachingonline #civilservicesstudy #geographynow
