He sent men to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there, and said to her, “Please, wear mourning clothes as if you were a mourner, and do not anoint the dead man. She acted like a woman who had long mourned for him, And Joab put words into her mouth, telling her to go to the king and say such and such to him. When the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground and said, “Help me, O king!” The king said to her, “What is the matter?” She answered, “I am truly a widow. My husband is dead. I have two sons, and they fought in the field, and because there was no one to stop them, one boy struck and killed the other. The whole clan rose up and persecuted me, your servant, saying, ‘Give me the one who killed his brother! We will avenge him by killing him and cut off his heirship!’ Therefore, they will extinguish the remaining coals within me and leave no trace of my husband’s name or offspring in the world.” The king said to the woman, “Go to your house; I will issue a command on your behalf.” The woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord the king, the sin shall be upon me and my father’s house; and the king and the throne…” There shall be no fault. The king said, “Bring to me whoever speaks to you, and he shall not touch you again.” The woman said, “Please, O king, remember the Lord your God, and do not let the avenger kill any more, for I am afraid my son will be killed.” The king said, “As the Lord lives, not a single hair of your son shall fall to the ground.” The woman said, “Please allow your servant to speak a word to my lord the king.” He said, “Speak.” Then why have you thought this concerning the people of God? By saying this, you have become like a sinner, for you have not brought the exiled one back home. We will surely die, and it will be like water spilled on the ground that cannot be gathered back up; yet God does not take away life, but provides a way so that the exiled one will not be forsaken by God. Now I come, my lord I ask the King this because the people have made me afraid, and your servant said of her own accord that if I speak to the King, perhaps he will carry out what his servant asks. For the King will hear and save his servant from the hand of him who will cut me and my son off together from the inheritance of God. Your servant also said of her own accord that she wished the word of my lord the King would be a comfort to her, for my lord the King distinguishes between good and evil like the angel of God. May the Lord your God be with you. The King answered the woman and said, "I hope you will not hide from me what I ask you." The woman said, "Speak, my lord the King." The King said, "Did Joab have you in all this?" The woman answered and said, "As my lord the King lives, no one will turn my lord the King's word to the left or to the right. Your servant Joab gave me command, and he put all these words into the mouth of your servant." This is "It is because your servant Joab has done this to change the situation. My lord the king’s wisdom is like the wisdom of the angel of God, for he knows all things on earth," he said. The king said to Joab, "I have granted this request; go and bring the young man Absalom." Joab bowed down to the ground and prayed for the king’s blessing. He said, "My lord the king, since you have granted your request, I know today that I have found favor in your sight." So Joab arose and went to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. The king said, "Let him go back to his house so that he cannot see my face." So Absalom went back to his house and did not see the king’s face. There was no one in all Israel who was greatly praised for his beauty as Absalom, for he was without blemish from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
