Interview with Michael VanElzakker about the new NIH study.
Michael VanElzakker is a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital with a long-standing interest in ME/CFS and its neurological manifestations. I spoke with him recently about the just-published study from the US National Institutes of Health: "Deep phenotyping of post-infectious myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome.” The study, which involved extensive testing of 17 ME/CFS patients and 21 healthy controls, sparked outrage in the patient community over its focus on a construct called "effort preference" rather than post-exertional malaise, among other flaws.
