Astigmatism is an eye disease caused, most of the time, by irregularity of the cornea and its effect is image distortion, as the light rays do not reach the same point on the retina. 02:48 - Corneal astigmatism This is a defect in the curvature of the cornea, a transparent structure that covers the eyes and functions more or less like the glass top of a watch. In people with good vision, the cornea has a spherical shape 02:57 - Lenticular astigmatism This is similar to corneal astigmatism, but it affects the lens instead of the cornea. Instead of a perfect curve, the lens has variations that cause images to reach the back of the eye, or retina, imperfectly. Most patients with lenticular astigmatism have a normally shaped cornea. 03:25 - What causes astigmatism? There may be many causes for the appearance of astigmatism, but the most common are related to genetic factors and risk behaviors. While in healthy people the cornea is round, similar to a basketball, in people with astigmatism it is oval, similar to an American football. Having cases of the disease in the family is an indication that attention should be paid.
