It's the middle of the night right now. In the distance, a dog howls and a police siren drifts in the black void. It's only faint, but somewhere nearby is the sound of bass, pulsing slowly, almost in time to the waves. Welcome back to After Dark: Nightshift. Come closer and you'll hear the music properly. That's it, right there. It's slow and low (that is the tempo). You can let yourself go. You can be free (or if not free, then heavily discounted). This is what music in a discotheque should sound like. It's music for grown ups, music for sophisticats, music for dirty dogs. It's music that screams get your groove on. So we're delivering another batch of slow cooked musical stews. We've made sure the tempo stays nice and steady and the emphasis is on funk, soul, grits and corn fried chicken. We've dug deep in the vaults for some killer oldies, an obscurity or two, some forgotten electronic tunes and a ton of previously unreleased gems. We've done so much digging we had to hire a forklift truck and tractor. Among the unreleased nuggets, there's the Fernando mix of The Detachments, a fine example of modern post-punk, with its sneery delivery and swinging rhythm. Fernando also donated a previously unreleased song from the vaults, 'Faraway Sensation'. We're also inordinately excited about another one of Andrew Meecham's projects, Gino Fontaine, a tune we heard a year ago but has languished in his Stafford catacombs ever since. Also just as we were about to lock ourselves away in the After Dark laboratory, armed only with sticky back plastic, toilet roll tubes and John Noakes, we were tipped off about some hitherto secret recordings between Robert Fripp and The Grid. We had to have one of those sneaked through without its passport. There are also some proper club faves here, too. Our biggest tune of the past year, the ineffably daft but brilliant 'Mopedbart' by Hubbabubbaklubb is included as well as the Miseridub of arguably our favourite downtempo song of the past decade, 'Boutade' by Mugwump. We couldn't put together something like this without a few oldies, and we've got Salsoul Invention and General Lee along for the party. Glad to have you on board, guys. There were even a couple of specials cooked up especially for the occasion by Bill and cohort, the brilliant Ray Mang (under the moniker Mang Dynasty: geddit?), namely 'After Dark' and their rework of Daniele Patucchi's 'People Come In', an obscure '80s library-esque tune begging for a little spring clean. So, put your glad rags on, the glittery boots with the worrying heels, and some sparkly make-up. Girls, you can wear what you like. Hold on to the rails, it's going to be a bumpy ride. The moon's sinking fast, we better get a move on. After Dark, here we come.
