To defend it, the Spanish built this castle in 1657 on San Lázaro Hill, a strategic hill that provided surveillance of the entire bay. 🔹 Advanced military design: Unlike other fortifications of the time, the Castillo de San Felipe was designed with a structure of sloping walls to withstand cannon fire and a system of secret tunnels that allowed troops and supplies to be moved unseen. These tunnels, some of which can still be explored, were also key in the city's defense, as if the enemy tried to enter, the Spanish could flood them or cause them to collapse. 🔹 Historic Battles: The fortress was put to the test in 1741, when English Admiral Edward Vernon led an attack with more than 27,000 men and 186 ships in what would be the largest battle in Caribbean history.
