It's a linear permutation exercise in which three men and two women arrange themselves for a photograph. This problem usually comes from the form: how many ways can five books be arranged on a shelf? Or from the form: five friends go to the movies, three girls and two boys. How many ways can they sit if the girls must be separated? We'll treat variations as a case of permutations. The difference between permutations and combinations is that in permutations, the order of the elements matters, while in combinations, the order doesn't. Let's start by reviewing definitions and theory, and then we'll solve many problems. The problems are grouped by difficulty level: easy, intermediate, and difficult.
