A new government will be elected in Germany in February 2025, the so called "Neuwahlen". After doubts about the current government in Germany have grown, many fear that a new government will be heavily influenced by right-wing forces. However, the poll results for the far-right “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) are not equally high across Germany: the election results for the AfD are particularly high in the so-called “new federal states”, which have been part of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1990. Exactly where a socialist regime ruled until 1990. We wanted to know exactly why the AfD is so successful there and talked to local politicians and people.
