Paying Tribute

For the past several weeks, Jim Roache has quietly walked the paths of Canton Corner Cemetery, carefully cleaning the gravestones of the soldiers of Stoughton—today's Canton—who answered the call to serve our nation. One by one, each stone has been lovingly restored. Fresh American flags now stand proudly beside them, accompanied by special markers honoring those who fought for American independence. It is an act of remembrance. An act of gratitude. An act of keeping faith with those who came before us. When the Canton Historical Society was founded in 1871, our first president wrote these words: "The finger of time is ever slowly obliterating the record of the past. Should we succeed in rescuing from oblivion and forgetfulness the deeds of the men of former times, and, like Old Mortality, clear away the moss from the mouldering gravestones of the past, our enterprise will be happily accomplished." More than 150 years later, those words still guide us. This short film is about more than cleaning old stones.
