AKTINA TV Report: Greek Parade 2024 In New York Celebrating Greek Independence

AKTINA TV™ special report with Elena Maroulleti, Executive Producer/Host covering the annual Greek Parade which took place on April 14, 2024 on New York's Fifth Avenue in Manhattan fully decorated with Greek flags to celebrate the 203rd anniversary of Greek Independence from the Ottoman Turks. Report includes close captions. The Greek war for independence was officially launched on March 25, 1821 and ended with a hard-win Greek victory. The main spectacle again this year was the participation of the elite National Guard of Greece known as the Evzones who electrified everyone as they gracefully marched down Fifth Avenue. The Parade also featured the huge Acropolis Flag brought from Greece on this occasion as well as the old Philharmonic band of Corfu. The Parade's awareness theme was the 50th tragic anniversary of the July 20, 1974 invasion and continued occupation of Cyprus by Turkey. Organized by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York this Parade coverage highlights thousands of Greek and Greek Cypriot Americans most of them dressed in traditional Greek costumes from over 95 local and out of state organizations, federations, parishes, schools, colleges, Greek Americans from the NYC Police force and other local government departments and others who marched from 66th to 79th Street accompanied by floats most of them displaying Greek heroes from 1821, marching bands and Greek and Cypriot flags. The report also includes interviews with the organizers, US elected officials as well as officials from Greece, celebrities including an interview with Greek American NFL star George Karlaftis defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs who was one this year's Grand Marshals as well as reactions from spectators. The well organized parade supported by good weather also attracted and thousands of enthused Greek and non-Greek spectators who shared Greek pride. Contributing reporter, Vasilis Michalis.
