Why does the throttle body get so dirty? Because the EGR valve allows exhaust gases into the intake manifold just below the throttle body (to burn off any remaining exhaust gases) - there's a tube there, usually metal. It's important to be careful when tightening the throttle body so that it seats evenly on the O-ring.
