Waking Dahlia Tubers! Sorting & Potting Early Bloomers

Its PHASE ONE of the Dahlia Saga! Today we cover the first step in a year long process of growing our beautiful dahlias! We start by inspecting each tuber to check for rot. If the poor little bitties didn't survive the winter, we stick 'em in the compost to rejoin the garden next year. We check each tuber for firmness and look for eyes beginning to form. If they are firm and solid, but haven't sprouted eyes, we set them aside to be checked on periodically. Finally, the tubers we find that have sprouted eyes and are nice and firm, we bring them to the greenhouse to be potted up and continue to awaken from their winter slumber!
