It was produced by Quincy Jones and Jackson himself for the singer's sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Initially Porcaro had recorded a demo tape of the song, which he gave to Jones - who in turn managed to include the ballad on the album as the last to be selected, replacing "Carousel" in the final listing. "Human Nature" was released on May 30, 1983 as the fifth single from the album, and managed to reach #2 on Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary hit chart, and seventh on the Hot 100, becoming the fifth hit Jackson's Top 10. The ballad also garnered positive reviews from several critics, and numerous artists have made their versions of the song, including Miles Davis, Nas, Boyz II Men, Amber Riley and Chord Overstreet from the series Glee.
