Ashby’s Law of Requisite Variety states that only variety can absorb variety — meaning a regulator must match the complexity of the system it seeks to control. Wide Cybernetics offers a fundamentally different approach: Rather than attempting to build a control layer with sufficient variety to regulate the system, we recognize that the communication field itself must carry the full variety of the system. Any restricted, cordoned-off, or secondary transparency/monitoring layer will necessarily contain less variety than the full system. Therefore, it can never truly regulate or align with the intelligence that emerges. The only viable solution is to make the transparent, participatory communication field the primary substrate of the system — open to all participants at all times.
