From no floor to a warm timber Finish with Tasmanian black wattle.

Welcome back to Old Stones New Paths! This week, we take another big step in restoring our 1834 convict-built cottage & barn as we bring new life to the back room. We install a brand new timber floor where there was once none, completely transforming the space from bare and unusable into something warm and full of character. Alongside this, we build a handcrafted flagstone hearth for the fireplace, adding a timeless focal point that fits perfectly with the cottage’s heritage. Restoring a 200-year-old building is never straightforward. Every stage brings its own challenges, unexpected discoveries, and plenty of lessons along the way. In this episode, we also step away from the worksite to visit a unique piece of local history—the Old Hamilton Inn sofa at the museum—connecting our restoration journey with the stories of the past.
