C2C Care Flag Storage: A Time of Great Possibilities
Historic flags, both large and small, are commonly found in small and mid-sized institutions and are made of a wide variety of materials utilizing a myriad of techniques. These materials and their deterioration, along with any previous treatments that might be found in collections, will greatly influence the storage method needed for each flag. During this webinar, participants will learn about: -Several methods of flag storage, through both discussion and illustrations. -Storage solutions, from from low-tech to state-of-the-art. -Flat and rolled storage techniques. Presenter: Gwen Spicer, Spicer Art Conservation, LLC Gwen Spicer is a textile, upholstery and objects conservator with over thirty years experience. She earned her M.A. in Art Conservation from Buffalo State College and was an adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and since taught and lectured around the world. She has been involved with several large upholstery and flag conservation projects across the United States. In her private practice, she assists many individuals and organizations of all sizes with storage, collection care and exhibitions, and has become known for her innovative conservation treatments. A recent project was overseeing the inaugural textiles displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. She has received a Kress fellowship that enabled her to write the 2019 book on the use of magnets in museums, Magnetic Mounting Systems for Museums and Cultural Institutions. She is a Fellow and active member of the American Institute for Conservation and the Flag Research Center.
