Will the US–Iran Deal Collapse? 3 Major Risks That Could Break the “Peace Framework” A war is not fully over, yet a peace narrative has already started shaping global headlines. After weeks of intense negotiations, the United States and Iran have reportedly reached a 14-point preliminary agreement. While the formal signing is expected in Switzerland, both sides have already signaled political approval, according to diplomatic sources. This is not a final peace treaty—only a 60-day framework for further negotiation. Within this window, key issues like sanctions relief, nuclear restrictions, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz are expected to be finalized. But analysts warn: this entire structure stands on fragile ground. Here are three major risks that could collapse the deal at any moment. First: Israel Factor One of the biggest pressure points is Israel’s position in the region. The agreement reportedly includes expectations of de-escalation across multiple fronts, including Lebanon. However, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon have continued despite diplomatic announcements. The US argues that troop withdrawal is not a binding condition, while Iran and Hezbollah insist that without it, any “peace” remains incomplete. A renewed escalation could immediately derail the entire framework. Second: The Uranium Question Iran’s uranium stockpile remains a core concern. Reports suggest Iran holds around 400 kg of uranium enriched up to 60%, dangerously close to weapons-grade levels. While both sides have agreed in principle to downblend and allow IAEA monitoring, trust remains extremely low. Any suspicion of renewed enrichment could trigger US military escalation, turning the 60-day window into a high-risk standoff. Third: Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty The world’s most critical energy chokepoint remains a major flashpoint. Even if the deal moves forward, reopening the Strait of Hormuz is not guaranteed. Issues include possible service fees, disputed control mechanisms, and unexploded naval mines. Iran has hinted at charging transit-related costs, while the US insists the route must remain toll-free. Meanwhile, shipping insurers and operators remain cautious, delaying full-scale maritime recovery. Despite the announcement, this is not stability—it is a pause under pressure. Even former US President Donald Trump has warned that if talks fail, military action could return. Iranian officials, meanwhile, continue to express deep mistrust toward Washington. The result is a tense paradox: diplomacy has begun, but the battlefield logic has not disappeared. For now, the “peace framework” stands between three powerful triggers—Israel, uranium, and Hormuz. Any one of them could be enough to break the deal.
