1730: Mocz na korytarzach i wszy w perukach — Brudna rzeczywistość dworu Augusta II Mocnego

Augustus II the Strong – one of the most admired rulers of the Baroque era – built a court that was destined to enchant all of Europe. But behind the gilding, Meissen porcelain, and thousands of candles lay a world unseen in textbooks: corridors reeking of urine, wigs swarming with lice, and bodies that hadn't touched water for weeks. How was it possible that one of Europe's most magnificent courts could simultaneously be so literally filthy? And how much of these stories is documented reality of the era, and how much is political propaganda directed against the Wettins? In this film, we explore what life was really like at Augustus II's court – in Dresden and Warsaw – between 1694 and 1733. We delve into the realities of Baroque medicine, based on the miasma theory, the lack of sewage and bathrooms as we understand them today, and accounts from other European courts, including Versailles, where the problem of uncleanliness in the corridors is well documented in the sources. We also show the role of the army of servants, without whom this entire lavish spectacle of power would have crumbled within days. At the same time, we separate fact from legend. Many of the vivid descriptions of the "dirty Saxon court" come not from official documents, but from pamphlets and memoirs written years later by people for whom the filth and debauchery of the Saxons were a political weapon, not a description of reality. Some elements of this story are well-established, such as the lack of sanitary infrastructure in Baroque palaces or the dominant miasma theory of the time. Others are justified generalizations of the realities of the era, without specific confirmation for a specific corridor in Dresden or Warsaw. Some, however, are the result of a dark legend fueled for years by Polish domestic politics. This story is important not because it allows us to grimace at the image of Baroque luxury, but because it demonstrates how easily the everyday life and hygiene of ordinary people become tools of political propaganda. The image of the "dirty Saxon" has persisted in Polish memory far longer than the realities that created it—and continues to influence how we think about the Saxon era. Should the stereotype that shaped our memory of the era for centuries be questioned with the same rigor as any other historical source? On this channel, we separate the documented realities of the era from the legends and propaganda that have shaped Polish historical memory for centuries.
