The introduced, the exotic, and the invasive - A story of invasive plants with Dr Ankila Hiremath
People have always travelled the world with plants and animals in tow. There is evidence of African millets in the Indus valley almost 4000 years ago; legend goes that Baba Budan brought coffee to India from Yemen in the 17th century; and not many people realise that we have Portugues travellers to thank for the potatoes and tomatoes that we eat every day. Every once in a while, however, exotic introduced plants can become ‘invasive.’ This talk will focus on what makes some plants invasive, and why invasive plants are a concern.
