This time, the criticism is coming from within the Israeli military itself. An Israeli reserve colonel, Ronen Cohen, has publicly urged the government to withdraw troops from southern Lebanon. According to Cohen, the presence of Israeli troops in the region no longer provides a clear strategic advantage. He even referred to Israeli soldiers stationed in Lebanon as "soft targets." This term describes troops that are vulnerable and constantly under threat. Cohen believes many Israeli soldiers have suffered casualties without a corresponding military objective. "We are there for no reason," he said, as quoted by Al Mayadeen, Saturday (June 20, 2026). He also criticized the government's rationale for claiming the troop presence is necessary to protect northern Israel. According to Cohen, this security objective could actually be achieved through other, more effective means. On the other hand, Cohen acknowledged that Hezbollah's military capabilities remain very strong. He said the group still possesses missiles and drones capable of reaching a variety of targets. This capability is said to continue to put pressure on Israeli forces on the ground. Cohen's statement comes amid mounting Israeli military losses in southern Lebanon. Israeli media reported that four Israeli soldiers were killed in the latest clashes with Hezbollah. One of the dead was Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon. He was known to have served as Commander of the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade. According to an Israeli military report, Ben Simhon's tank was hit during an operation in the Kfar Tebnit area. The attack is believed to have been carried out by a Hezbollah drone or anti-tank missile. Four tank crew members were reportedly killed in the incident. The Israeli military is still investigating the exact cause of the explosion that destroyed the combat vehicle. The attack not only killed personnel but also exposed the vulnerability of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. Hours after the first incident, Hezbollah launched another attack using explosive drones. The attack hit Israeli Commando Brigade troops stationed in the same area. Five Israeli soldiers were reportedly injured. One was seriously injured and required intensive care. Israeli media also expressed concerns that Hezbollah was increasingly targeting senior Israeli commanders. The group is said to be able to identify vehicles used by military officers. This capability is considered a serious threat to Israeli operations in Lebanon. Amid mounting casualties and military losses, Cohen warned that the situation could worsen. He compared the current situation to Israel's experience during the long conflict in Lebanon in the past. He stated that the military costs and casualties Israel is now facing are increasingly high. However, the benefits gained are not commensurate with the sacrifices. Therefore, Cohen urged the government to immediately withdraw troops from southern Lebanon.
