The department of Lempira has an area of 4,228 square kilometers and is located in western Honduras. It borders the departments of Copán and Santa Bárbara to the north, the Republic of El Salvador to the south, Ocotepeque, Copán, and El Salvador to the west, and the departments of Santa Bárbara and Intibucá to the east. It was established on June 28, 1825.
