Islam made me a better wife

As-salamu alaykum Fam! Insha’Allah you’re all doing well💚 In today’s video I wanted to talk about how I am learning so much about myself as I immerse myself further into the Qur’an. Alhamdulillah! There are so many examples about marriage from the Qur’an that we can learn from and Insha’Allah when we learn something we can start to embody or incorporate the new information. In the west, being a feminist or being a “Boss Babe” or competing with men or even being independent from men is recommended and promoted. I believe this idea is pushed to replace the man as the head of the family, with the state! I’ve come to realize that my a lot of my drive to become a professor and build a career was driven by a force that wasn’t completely organic to me, but rather it was a result of this programming. With each accomplishment I was able to achieve, like graduating from Berkeley or from Columbia, I was getting closer to my professional goal however I was getting further and further away from my spiritual nature. Every choice has an opportunity cost and I realized now that the 9 years I spent in academia put a strain on my marriage and who knows where we would be had I placed less emphasis on my need for a career and focused moron my relationship with my husband. My choices ultimately left me hollow and lacking of any spiritually significant accomplishment. Alhamdulillah for my husband who has always been patient with me and allowed me room to grow. Richard is originally from California and as you probably know, I was born and raised in Canada. So we literally spent our first date in the living off the back of an overland open-air truck together for 12-weeks. Alhamdulillah! Three of the ayat in the Qur’an that I have been reflecting upon in the Qur’an are 30:21, 51:49, and 3:36. In the English translation of verse 30:21 of the Qur’an, Allāh (SWT) says “And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. And He has placed between you compassion and mercy. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect.” In the English translation of ayah 51:49 Allāh (SWT) tells us that “And We created pairs of all things so perhaps you would be mindful.” And finally in the English translation of ayah 3:36 of the Qur’an Allāh (SWT) tells us that “And the male is not like the female.” So then, I’ve also started to embrace my feminine nature. I’ve grown my hair out long, I’ve been wearing more feminine clothing like skirts and dresses and Alhamdulillah I’ve also started to learn how to cook! 💙My favorite YouTube chef is Dimitra from @DimitrasDishes: https://youtube.com/@DimitrasDishes?s... This is all in stark contrast to when I was a graduate student at NYU. When I was at NYU, I shaved all my hair off, I wore more masculine clothing and definitely carried myself in a different way and would never, ever cook for myself. I am also less competitive now and I don’t always need the last word when in a discussion with my husband. Alhamdulillah!
