This bottle will be transformed into a leafcutter ant colony. We're going to try to simulate an underground ant colony inside a fabric softener bottle. "Ah, but how is that possible?" I'll explain. We already know that when a leafcutter ant mates with a male, she lands on the ground, cuts off her wings, and immediately begins to dig a hole to start a new colony. So that's where we come in. We're going to capture the queen ant, that is, the already fertilized leafcutter ant, so that she can dig the new colony here, in this fabric softener bottle. This one has a capacity of 5 liters, and it measures around 40 to 50 cm in height. This size is ideal for the queen ant to start her colony, because in nature, the queen usually digs a depth of approximately 30 to 40 cm. For approximately 90 days, the queen will lay her first eggs and care for them alone, feeding the larvae and the first pupae, using her fat reserves (from the wings she tears off). The first worker ants that will emerge, usually in a period of about 45 to 60 days, are very small and will take on internal tasks. Only after approximately 90 days, with the colony more developed and the gardening workers already cultivating the fungus (which is the basis of the colony's diet), only then is the first entrance, that is, the exit, opened to the outside, and the leafcutter workers begin to go out to look for leaves.
