The Kerkerbach Railway in Miniature - Preserving a Forgotten Narrow-Gauge Railway in HO Scale (1:87)
Among Germany’s many prototype-based model railways, the “Kerkerbach Railway in Miniature” stands out as an exceptional example of historical research, craftsmanship, and operational authenticity. Rather than creating a fictional railway, the builders have faithfully recreated one of Germany’s most fascinating standard- and meter-gauge private railways, preserving its unique character in H0 and H0m scale (1/87). The project has become far more than a model railway: It is a living historical archive that keeps the memory of the original Kerkerbach Railway alive for future generations. The origins of the model railroad layout date back to 2010, when a small exhibition commemorated the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Kerkerbach Railway. As part of this event, members of the Limburg-Hadamar Model Railway Club joined forces to build replicas of several buildings, industrial facilities, train stations, and several custom-built vehicles. The overwhelmingly positive response from visitors inspired a far more ambitious vision: Instead of constructing isolated dioramas, why not recreate the railway itself? This decision marked the beginning of an ever-expanding modular model train layout that continues to grow today. Unlike many exhibition model railway layouts, the Kerkerbach Railway in Miniature is based on extensive historical research. Original track plans, engineering drawings, photographs, operating documents and eyewitness accounts have all been used to ensure that every structure, siding and landscape feature reflects the appearance of the real railway during its final decades of operation. The emphasis is not simply on visual realism, but on recreating the railway’s operational character. Freight traffic, industrial sidings, locomotive movements and train formations follow the historical practices of the original metre-gauge line, allowing visitors to experience how the railway actually functioned. Every important building and engineering structure has been carefully reproduced, including the distinctive loading gantry used to transfer limestone, basalt and ore from narrow-gauge wagons into standard-gauge freight cars. Other faithfully modelled features include: The transshipment facilities and loading ramps, the workshops and maintenance buildings, the station administration offices, surrounding roads, level crossings and industrial connections. Even the smallest details, such as maintenance trolleys, platform equipment, signalling, fencing and road vehicles, have been individually crafted, creating an exceptionally convincing impression of everyday railway life during the 1950s. One of the model rail layout’s greatest strengths is its authentic track, which is designed for both standard-gauge and meter-gauge model trains. In addition, there is a light railway (“Feldbahn”) for transporting stones. Freight traffic dominates the scene: Limestone quarries, basalt works and industrial customers generate continuous shunting activity. Locomotives, rolling stock and train formations have all been carefully selected to match historical photographs and operational records. A defining characteristic of the Kerkerbach Railway in Miniature is the extraordinary amount of scratch-built work. Since virtually none of the railway’s buildings or many of its vehicles exist as commercial kits, they have been individually designed and constructed using historical documentation. Many locomotives, freight wagons and maintenance vehicles have likewise been specially built or extensively modified to represent authentic Kerkerbach Railway rolling stock. This high proportion of custom-built models gives the model railway layout a distinctive identity rarely found on conventional model railways. The Kerkerbach Railway in Miniature represents one of Germany’s most remarkable prototype-based model railway projects. Combining meticulous historical research with outstanding modelling skills, it recreates a vanished narrow-gauge railway with extraordinary authenticity. Every station, industrial siding and locomotive tells the story of a railway that once connected communities, industries and people throughout the Kerkerbach Valley. More than a miniature landscape, the model train layout is a tribute to regional railway heritage. This demonstrates how model railroads can preserve history as effectively as any museum exhibit.
