My Story: A Child of Refugee’s Journey | Sahar Nahib | TEDxYouth@ISPrague
Many nine-year-old girls worry about clothing, friends, fun and dolls. When Sahar Nahib was nine, she and her family worried about escaping from the claws of the oppressive Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Nahib became a child refugee in 1998. She began a long journey through several countries, living in three refugee camps, then experienced racism and discrimination first-hand. This talk breaks a few stereotypes: not all refugees remain isolated from the host country’s language and culture; and not all Afghan women are deprived of education, their own opinions and rights. Sahar Nahib is Afghan-American. She initially arrived with her family in Prague 17 years ago, attended a Czech school and then graduated from the International School of Prague. She recently finished her undergraduate degree, double majoring in Biological Chemistry and Russian at Grinnell College, USA. Currently she is working as an elementary school teacher in an international school. Nahib plans to pursue a post-graduate degree in education with a focus on science and research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
