Gartly Level Crossing, Aberdeenshire

Date filmed: Monday the 8th of July 2024 Video filmed at 15:54 Route: Aberdeen to Inverness Line Between Insch (INS) and Huntly (HNT) Stations Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: Old Military Road, Gartly (AB54 4QA) An automatic half barrier level crossing with loud, old-sounding alarms located in the small Aberdeenshire village of Gartly near Huntly. It is on a very quiet road which leads up a scenic hillside - good for a walk if you've a long wait to kill for the next train - and it still retains its Mk.1 twin-arm half barriers to the day of filming with no sign of impending renewal. The alarm sound here is not dissimilar to that of the previous half-barrier set-up back at Boat of Kintore, and the remains of the former station here are clearly visible from the crossing - closed in 1968. The telegraph pole on the side the intro shot was taken still obscures the view of that set of lights on that barrier assembly quite a bit. A Class 158 can be seen speeding towards Insch and Aberdeen in this video, and you can tell it before you see it because of its distinct horn tone.
