Who Are You When the Role Changes?

Who are you when the role changes? Many educators spend years building an identity around a school, a position, a title, or a reputation. But what happens when that role changes? In this episode of *Balanced by Design*, Dr. Cathy White explores the difference between role and identity, why career transitions can feel like grief, and how tying our sense of self to a specific context can make change far more difficult than it needs to be. Drawing from her own experience of leaving higher education after more than a decade as a professor and returning to work in schools, Cathy discusses: ✔ Why role changes can feel like losing a part of yourself ✔ The difference between roles, skills, and values ✔ How identity becomes attached to schools, titles, and expertise ✔ Why transitions often trigger uncertainty and self-doubt ✔ How to carry your purpose forward when your position changes Whether you're changing schools, moving into leadership, retiring, relocating, or simply wondering what's next, this conversation will help you think differently about identity, growth, and the seasons of your career. Reflection Questions: • What parts of your identity are tied to your current role? • Which parts would still be true if your title changed tomorrow? • What values do you want to carry into your next season? Next week, Cathy is joined by friends and colleagues who are navigating major life and career transitions of their own as they discuss what it feels like to leave familiar roles and discover who they are when the labels begin to change. #EducationLeadership #TeacherBurnout #SchoolLeadership #EducationalLeadership #TeacherLife #CareerTransition #Identity #PersonalGrowth #InternationalSchools #BalancedByDesign 00:00 – 00:24 · Welcome & Today’s Focus 00:24 – 01:25 · A Big Life Pivot: From Tenured Professor to International Teacher 01:25 – 02:36 · Starting Over in Korea: New Country, New System, Same Teacher 02:36 – 03:37 · Shifting from Professor to K–12 Teacher 03:37 – 05:23 · Another Move, Another Shift: When Leadership Changes the Job You Were Hired For 05:23 – 06:38 · When Your “Expert” Status Disappears 06:38 – 07:53 · Teacher vs. “Teacher at This School” 07:53 – 09:07 · Retirement, Empty Nests, and Role Changes at Home 09:07 – 10:20 · Relocation: New Cities, States, and Countries 10:20 – 11:36 · New Schools & New Leaders: The Discomfort of Being New Again 11:36 – 12:25 · Grieving Past Versions of Yourself 12:25 – 13:26 · Role vs. Identity: What Actually Stays with You 13:26 – 14:09 · Roles Change, Skills Transfer, Values Endure 14:09 – 15:13 · Roles Are Fluid, Skills Are Portable 15:13 – 16:40 · Values as the Core of Identity 16:40 – 17:16 · Put Identity as Close to Your Values as Possible 17:16 – 18:12 · The Fear of Starting Over (Even When You’ve Done It Before) 18:12 – 19:23 · When Loss Becomes Growth 19:23 – 20:35 · Reflective Questions: What If Transition Doesn’t Mean Losing Yourself? 20:35 – 21:35 · Your Role Is Only One Expression of Who You Are 21:35 – 23:10 · Feeling Like an Outsider: Class, Age, Background, and “Belonging” 23:10 – 24:19 · Solid Identity as Protection Against Shame and Exclusion 24:19 – 25:22 · Questions to Untangle Identity from Your Current Role 25:22 – 25:59 · Looking Ahead: Guests in Transition 25:59 – 26:13 · Closing Reflection & Takeaway
