Archival Footage of 389th Bomb Group 2nd Air Division 8th USAAF at Hethel
We acquired this silent film footage some 30 years ago to transfer to BetacamSP video and digitized and published it in 2025. A big thanks to Chris Gregg, the historian whose web site is www.389thbg.com and who moderates the 389th FB group who provided us the details of this film: “Definitely a lot of 389th BG aircraft in there, with the one exception. Great walk around of the original Green Dragon assembly ship. The ceremony was during the spring of 1944 and the group was awarded for its participation in the low-level Ploesti mission. They lined up several of their remaining B-24D's for the ceremony. Only a handful of the Ploesti veteran aircraft were left so they also included a couple of the late model D's that arrived during the fall of 1943. And really by that point, 8 months later, the remaining personnel may not have known which aircraft flew the mission or not.” Dad was a navigator on 12 different B24s in the 467th BG. Dad, Mom, sister Joan and I worked over four decades on recording the history of the 2nd Air Division 8th USAAF. This is one of 100 videos about the 2nd Air Division on our channel. We continue to digitize tons more archival footage and have about 900 more interviews of veterans, family members, British friends, British RAF, American Air Force, German civilians and Luftwaffe fighter pilots to digitize as well. @2nd.Air.Division.8thUSAAF YouTube At the end of the World War II in the European theatre of war in 1945 and in the years since the 2nd Air Division raised funds to create a "living memorial", what is now named the American Library Memorial to the 2nd Air Division 8th USAAF, a place to not only remember those who gave their lives, but to also build upon the cultural and enduring ties between the peoples of America and the United Kingdom. The library, in Norwich, England, has books, events, lectures and an extensive research archive, serving as an important resource for information about a family member who served, about the war and about American culture. https://www.americanlibrary.uk A great way to find out more about women in World War II and other wars is through The Donut Dollies Podcast. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... I also want to add a link to the Mighty 8th Podcast. They are based in the UK and provide expanded coverage and insight into everything 8th Air Force. https://mighty8thpodcast.com
