Friedrich Merz likes to talk about foreigners who come to us for dental work, or alleged little tyrants who plague German schools, and his comments about the cityscape even led to a hate speech lawsuit – are these just slips of the tongue, or is there an explanation? We have a theory as to why our Chancellor keeps ruffling feathers in the media. And it has less to do with Merz himself than with the politicians from whom he learned the ropes. Helmut Kohl would simply refuse interviews and play director (at least if the chair was particularly dreadful). Edmund Stoiber explained the pension system in one sentence – "Free beer for everyone, and the last one to pay" – and otherwise stammered his way from his own garden plot to Charles de Gaulle's airport. Gerhard Schröder danced to the tunes of the Capri fishermen and called Bild, BamS, and the TV all he needed to govern. And Merz watched and learned from them. Merz isn't an outlier.
