A bowl-shaped village surrounded by cliffs / Walk around the island village, Ugurushima (Kochi Prefecture) An island about 23km southwest of Sukumo City, facing the Pacific Ocean where the Kuroshio Current roars. The highest point is Mount Ryuzu, 250m above sea level, and it is surrounded by cliffs. In the past, terraced fields of potatoes and wheat reached the sky. It is famous as a coastal fishing spot and a mecca for rock fishing. The island belonged to the Iyo-Uwajima domain, but after the border dispute with Toyo, it was incorporated into Kochi Prefecture in 1874. In the past, it was called "Ukishima" (Floating Island), "Tengashima" (Flat Island), or "Ugurushima" (Ukishima). There is a legend about the tragic love of a samurai with a high stipend of 350 koku in the Uwajima domain, and even today a small shrine is enshrined on the island, called Engen-sama. (Reference: Shimadasu) The settlement is formed on a gentle slope facing east, with its back to the mountain, to protect it from the winter monsoon (west wind). Like Hahajima and Hirose on the neighboring island of Okinoshima, this is a stone wall village made of granite (the island itself is made of granite), but it is small in scale. Despite that, there is a large elementary and junior high school building made of reinforced concrete at the port. The houses in the village are also thought to have been built in the 1960s and 1970s, so fishing was popular at the time and there must have been a large number of residents. The school is now closed and is used as an island meeting place. The young islanders all live in Katajima in Sukumo City to raise their children, but there are fishing lodges on the island.
