Certified wine expert by the Japan Sommelier Association. Yamaha drummer and Zildjian cymbal endorser. In 1986, he won a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music. While there, he played in Delfeayo Marsalis' band and performed at jazz festivals across the United States. He returned to Japan in 1990. His collaborative album with trumpeter Roy Hargrove was well-received in the US. He consistently held the top spot in the drumming category of jazz magazine Swing Journal for 16 years. He has released over 150 CDs, and his third album as a leader, "Walkin' Down Lexington" (King Records), won the Swing Journal's Production Planning Award. A documentary was produced for MBS during the recording of his fourth album, "Cross Fade" (King Records). He has also produced many works, and his album "Jazz Cinema Paradise" (King Records) was ranked number one for a long period of time on the high-resolution audio distribution site e-onkyo, garnering industry attention. His follow-up album "Jazz Cinema Fantasy" won the Jazz Japan Award. In 2018, he released his ninth album as a leader, "Tricollage" (King Records). He performed at Tokyo Jazz in 2004 and 2006, Shanghai Jazz in 2006, Taichung Jazz in 2011 and 2019, and the Beijing Drum Festival in 2019. He has performed with world-renowned drummers, including Dave Weckl. In 2020, he attempted the marriage of jazz and wine with the release of "The Days of Wine and Roses." To date, he has participated in over 200 jazz albums.
