In this video, our literature teacher summarizes the sixth chapter of Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. This chapter is an analepsis (a figure of speech that refers to a flashback). This chapter is the counterpart to Chapter 1, which contained analepsis to describe Charles's childhood. The purpose of this analepsis is to explain Emma's character and her relationship with religion and love. Emma entered the convent at the age of 13. She enjoyed it there because she was drawn to the mysticism of religion. We also learn that everyone expected her to become a nun. But that was without counting on her attraction to literature, especially forbidden novels.
