St Melangell's Shrine and Church, Pennant Melangell, Powys
St Melangell was an Irish princess who fled here to escape an arranged marriage. Prince Brochwel Ysgithrog was hunting hares and one hid in a bramble thicket where his dogs would not go, the hunstman could not blow his horn and the prince could not move. A beautiful woman was praying in the thicket and the hare was curled up in her robes. The prince was impressed by her religious fervour and gave her the valley where she established a religious community in the 8th century. It became a place of pilgrimage and contains the only example in Britain of a medieval romanesque shrine.
