The San Vito Historical Parade in Avigliano: we're in the midst of the countdown to the climactic evening of June 14th. With the city's mayor, Giuseppe Mecca, we retrace the final days of a celebration that has won the hearts of the people of Basilicata and beyond. "This is an event with historic origins, which is celebrated in Avigliano much like it is in Potenza. Over the past few years, it has seen exponential growth, with groups of participants coming not only from towns within Basilicata but also from outside the region. This cultural fusion is truly inspiring. The parade takes place in the heart of Avigliano, starting from Basso la Terra and winding its way through the town, passing through the crowds that gather on both sides and characterize the eve of the religious holiday." What are the main features of the parade? "We have the small temple that circles the church three times, and then the ship, which was recently renovated to mark the thirtieth anniversary of this procession's modern history. The event is an intangible heritage of the Basilicata Region. The other interesting element is the large presence of children in the procession. Furthermore, there are the arquebusiers, who may divide public opinion but are an essential part of the procession. This also raises the issue of balancing historical events with the new regulations on public performances." Great appreciation goes to the San Vito Martire association, which has provided a major boost to the revitalization of the procession. "Without this core group of young people pursuing these goals, it would be impossible to carry out this initiative, even with the help of the administration. We also support them logisticalally, thanks to a series of meetings aimed at coordinating the forces involved." This year's new features include increased attention to inclusion for people with disabilities and the provision of shuttles and dedicated parking areas to make it easier for everyone to access the procession route.
