A Tale of Two Malls - Golf Mill Shopping Center, Niles - Approved for Redevelopment

Once an outdoor shopping mall, Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles, Illinois underwent numerous renovations including becoming a traditional indoor mall. Far from traditional though, Golf Mill has numerous unique characteristics including a golf ball sized office building, and a Sears anchor located right in the middle of the mall! The eventual demise of Sears and closing of the anchor though left this mall divided in half! Neither side accessible from the other. One side to continue to serve as a traditional indoor mall with a food court, and receive moderate updates. The other side, a literal time capsule, fully accessible to the public, left untouched and unchanged, showcasing Golf Mill's history. A dead mall, hidden within an indoor mall! And as if the story couldn't get any more complex, within the past month the village of Niles gave the green light to redevelop the property. Where this mall, including the time capsule, will be leveled! And hearkening back to the mall's earliest days, becoming a "mixed-use" outdoor shopping mall once again! A mall I have given very little thought to before has quickly become one of my most fascinating mall experiences ever! Obviously when I filmed this video in March 2024, the redevelopment was only still a proposal. Golf Mill is too far from McHenry to become a series like Spring Hill was. But I will be back at least once more before the mall closes. As of the release of this video, no date has been given. I highly recommend every mall enthusiast visit the northern section time capsule at least once before it shuts down. This dead mall within a mall is representative of an era I barely even remember.
