Once winter arrives, these small towns face the sea and its increasingly violent waves. The dikes suffer, sometimes even breaking, as in Wimereux or Ambleteuse after several storms. Faced with these onslaughts, the coastline recedes. Inland, the water also causes widespread damage. Farmers are increasingly finding themselves with flooded fields for several months during the winter.
