Climbing the Corporate Ladder: What No One Tells You
Getting promoted in your career and moving up the corporate ladder can be tricky, especially if you aren't always the ideal corporate specimen like me. In this video I will go over what I have seen as important for moving up in the corporate world and how you can achieve it as soon as possible. Instagram: @kikoga 0:00 Let's Move On Up! 0:38 The Most Important Thing In Moving Up Having your manager be your biggest advocate is the single most important thing you can do to get promoted in the corporate world. I would argue it's more important than competence in the role. In the corporate structure, your manager is the one that helps put in the good word to the higher ups for stuff like salary raises, promotions, etc, so you want to be seen in a favorable light to give yourself your best chance. You can be the best worker, but if you manager doesn't like you, you will not likely get the recognition you are looking for. 5:33 The Second Most Important Thing Being visible, especially if you don't have that manager that advocates for you is also important. You want to show that you are there for the company and that people know who you are when they hear your name. This may mean putting yourself out of your comfort zone. You want your name to hold weight. 7:11 What Makes You Ready For Your Promotion Honestly just doing the first two things can get you pretty high in the corporate environment. I have seen it first hand. However, I do not want that for you, I want you to be promoted quickly, but being ready for it. This will involve longer hours to learn the business, and making sure you are actually taking the right steps so you are ready to manage people. There is nothing worse than a manager that doesn't know how the day to day operates, and you will have gotten that promotion for nothing. Also, if you are not getting the recognition, just stay the course. The "talkers" and the managers that don't have a great foundation ultimately weed themselves out, just stay the course and be sure you build your career the right way.
