25 Times THE CUPHEAD SHOW Was Made For Adults

The Cuphead Show is the Looney Toons for another generation. Maybe a more violent Mickey Mouse. The show is so filled with adult references that we're shocked it only has a 7+ rating! From dirty pasta jokes (canoodling is the best hint we'll give you) to disturbing horror movie references (The Grudge), this show hasn't missed much. Even its cursing is of another time and has snuck under the radar because time has made the bad words all but forgotten. Of course, what makes Cuphead such an instant classic is how much it leans into the tropes of old cartoons. Falling pianos, twins, a lonely housewife and a mail carrier. There’s some dark stuff going on with Elder Kettle and his recollection of war times. The Baroness has a moment that we’re sure is dirty, and Bowlboy’s nickname sounds suspiciously like something else. There’s some references only your grandma would understand. The weird thing about this show is there’s not one character worth rooting for. They’re all terribly immoral. Maybe that’s why we enjoy watching them injure themselves so much. But it creates questions around behavior. Parents may feel obligated to talk about the show with their kids and discern what’s right and what’s wrong. The most out-there moment in all of Cuphead had to be the episode with the German rat. It’s definitely an homage to old propaganda cartoons like the ones of Donald Duck but it comes off a bit jarring in 2022. Nothing is off-limits in The Cuphead Show so it seams. Even Mugman, the most morally conscious of them all, his goodness is driven by fear and isn’t real goodness.
