The governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila, described the release of audio recordings in which she is heard discussing alleged contacts with U.S. authorities as an act of "political revenge." The governor asserted that the recordings were obtained through a setup orchestrated by former governor Jaime Bonilla, whom she accused of facilitating a meeting with supposed intermediaries and then leaking the content for political purposes. She also denied negotiating agreements with U.S. agencies or acting against Mexico's interests. For his part, Jaime Bonilla rejected the accusations and stated that he did not participate in the recording or the release of the audios. The conflict has deepened the confrontation between the two politicians and generated tensions within the ruling coalition in Baja California in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
