The Doctrine of Justification Part 2
The Doctrine of Justification is the foundational doctrine of the Christian faith. It is the cornerstone upon which the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century was founded. In this sermon 'justification' is put forth and defined in accordance to Scripture alone. The two aspects of the Christian's 'justification', and where these come from, are expounded from the text of Scripture. It is shown that a common idea prevalent in the visible Church, — that forgiveness of sins is all that a man requires, — is not enough to make a man right before God. This sermon affirms that the 'forgiveness of sins' is required, this is what is called 'the passive obedience' of Christ; but that alone is not enough. The 'righteousness of Christ' is equally essential to 'justification'; and this is what is called 'the active obedience' of Christ. And, 'justification' is the combination of these two elements of the Lord Jesus Christ's work upon the cross.
