This episode presents Medtner’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in B minor, Op. 21, performed by Clémence de Forceville (violin) and Sergey Neller (piano). At first glance, this sonata gives an impression of classical clarity and restraint. Beneath this apparent simplicity, however, unfolds a world of remarkable emotional and intellectual density. Within a firmly classical framework, Medtner articulates a language whose inner tensions, harmonic ambiguities, and structural pressure already point toward the emergence of musical modernity. What appears classical on the surface conceals a distinctly non-classical expressive core. About the project The Medtner Code: Total Edition aims to record, perform, and share the entire piano, chamber, orchestral, and vocal output of Nikolai Medtner by 2030.
