Burnout and depression are two very similar illnesses. The cause is always an imbalance of the hormones dopamine (motivation) and serotonin (mood), as well as the stress hormone cortisol. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are prescribed, which are supposed to prolong the effects of the low serotonin levels.
