We are living in very strange times. For example, the world's population surpassed 8 billion for the first time on November 15, 2022. This has been described as another indicator of a planetary "overpopulation crisis"—and indeed, overpopulation appears to be part of, or at least a catalyst for, many systemic problems; I'll get to that in a moment. But while this population explosion is unfolding, a paradoxical fear has gripped developed countries, in particular: population collapse. Indeed, when we set aside global population growth and focus on the populations of specific countries, we see that population growth in many countries has stalled, or even reversed, meaning that the population has begun to shrink.
