VW Engine Build: Final Assembly Part 4, clutch & pressure plate, Type 1
Aircooled Volkswagen Type 1 engine building video: Final Assembly Part 4 of 4. Mike Smith goes over clutch and pressure plate installation. The break-in procedure for your new engine involves removing the spark plugs and rocker arm assemblies, then cranking for oil pressure until well after the warning light goes out. Squirt the valve stems and springs with oil before putting the rocker arm assemblies back on. You are now ready to start the engine for the first time. Do not let the engine idle at all during the first 5 or so minutes of operation. You should hold it to somewhere around 2,000+ rpm during this period. It never hurts to change the oil after this initial startup, but you must re-adjust the valves after the engine has cooled overnight. Your next oil change and valve adjustment should be no later than 500 miles down the road. These are the minimal engine break-in requirements, see the Gene Berg written material for a more complete procedure.
