JR Central has hired its first ever "career-hired station staff" this spring. What was the reason for taking this step in the "railway division," which had not previously employed career-hire positions? Tokyo Station, used by over 1 million people daily. I got the impression that I was supporting the daily lives of various people regardless of age or nationality (which led me to change jobs)." She decided to change jobs after using the Tokaido Shinkansen for weekly business trips, and joined JR Central through career-hire. In fact, JR Central had not previously employed career-hire positions in the "railway division," which require high levels of expertise and experience, such as vehicle maintenance. However, the job market in recent years has been an unusually strong seller's market, and to secure talent, they started recruiting experienced professionals last year. To acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for station staff, they undergo intensive training with instructors in the station's training room. Training Instructor: "Since the Hikari and Nozomi trains share the same platform in Nagoya, it's best to match the car numbers on the tickets." The fare calculation rules and the operation of the dedicated terminals were a completely different world from what she'd experienced before. Training Instructor: "The knowledge required for railways is vast, and there's so much to learn that even studying isn't enough; it seems quite challenging." When she actually tried dealing with foreign tourists... JR Tokai's Saya Uchibori: "Do you know where Hagota is?" There were times when she needed help from the instructor. Even so, Ms. Uchibori handled her duties with the polite customer service skills she cultivated in sales at a manufacturer, making eye contact and speaking clearly. The company felt a sense of accomplishment from hiring someone with prior experience. Training Instructor: "With trainees, you often get comments like, 'Hurry up!', but Ms. Uchibori didn't receive any such comments; she only offered words of encouragement." Ms. Uchibori became the company's first full-time employee. After passing the exams, she is now working independently.
