It was built in the mid-19th century, and the first official burial recorded there dates back to 1907. Currently, there are more than 2,500 vaults, of which approximately 1,000 are in a state of disrepair. Remember, this is a municipal cemetery; a large number of the abandoned vaults are due to a multi-million-dollar tax debt that is difficult for families to pay. In the court file, one affected family states, "They gave us some supposed ashes, we don't know what or who they are." To avoid arousing suspicion, the relatives received the supposed ashes. The bodies were then piled up in abandoned vaults or in the coffin storage facility. Seventeen vaults were investigated. In one of them, according to the internal summary, more than 50 coffins were found, which did not match the owner's internal records. In the court case, the Vicente López cemetery, at the time of the complaint, "does not have a crematorium."
