Infanta Sofía Defends Teachers in Her 1st Speech: “They Deserve Respect, Resources, Recognition.”
*Infanta Sofía Delivers Her First Official Speech, Championing Teachers and Education* Infanta Sofía took a major step into her public role on Tuesday in Zaragoza by delivering her first official institutional speech. Supported by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and her sister, Princess Leonor—whose attendance had not been officially announced—the 19-year-old addressed an audience for the first time in a formal capacity, using the occasion to highlight the vital role of teachers in society. Speaking before around 300 guests, including Spain's Minister of Education Mercedes Tolón, the President of Aragón Jorge Azcón, and Zaragoza Mayor Natalia Chueca, the Infanta described teaching as "one of the best professions in the world," adding that it "should be valued much more" and deserves "respect, resources, and full recognition." She emphasized that no one chooses to become a teacher for money or recognition, before acknowledging many of the challenges facing education today. Among them, she cited bullying, the erosion of teachers' authority, concerns over salaries, overcrowded classrooms, support for students with special educational needs, funding issues, and the ongoing pursuit of inclusive education. Despite these difficulties, Infanta Sofía praised the dedication of teachers, saying that in every school there is always an educator—often exhausted—who continues trying "to reach both our hearts and our minds." She stressed that teachers protect the "sacred time" of learning, helping students understand the world and develop independent thinking. She concluded that the teaching profession holds a value and importance that goes far beyond strategy, touching on what is truly essential. Her highly anticipated debut took place during the first edition of the *Docentes Referentes* awards, organized by the Ibercaja Foundation, where she serves as Honorary President. The socially focused event marks another carefully planned step in her growing institutional role and the development of her own public agenda within the Spanish Royal Family. Now 19, Infanta Sofía has recently returned from Portugal, where she has been studying Political Science and International Relations. Her return follows the completion of her university examinations, allowing her to resume official duties after a period in which her public appearances had been limited while living in Lisbon. The choice of Zaragoza as the venue was symbolic. The city is closely connected to Princess Leonor's military training, as it was at the General Military Academy there that the heir to the throne began her three-year military education, making Zaragoza an important location in the modern history of the Spanish Crown. The speech also represents the latest milestone in Infanta Sofía's carefully managed public debut. After years of appearing mainly alongside other members of the Royal Family, she carried out her first solo engagement on December 13, 2024, presenting awards at the *Objetivo Patrimonio – Infanta Sofía Photography Competition* at the Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid. She later attended, for the first time, the reception hosted by the King and Queen at the Royal Palace for Spain's National Day celebrations, as well as the flag tribute ceremony and the traditional military parade. In January, she undertook her second solo engagement by visiting the *ONCE Guide Dog Foundation* training center in Boadilla del Monte, where guide dogs are bred and trained for people with visual disabilities. A month later, she accepted the honorary presidency of the Ibercaja Foundation's *Docentes Referentes* initiative, launched to mark the foundation's 150th anniversary. The nationwide program recognizes excellence in education across Spain. By accepting her first honorary presidency, Infanta Sofía reaffirmed her commitment to education and young people. Following her successful speaking debut, the Spanish Royal Family is expected to reunite this Friday at the General Air and Space Academy in San Javier, Murcia, where King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía will attend the graduation ceremony for 111 newly commissioned officers. #SpanishRoyalFamily #InfantaSofia #PrincessLeonor #KingFelipeVI #QueenLetizia #RoyalFamily #Spain #Zaragoza #Live #RoyalNews #newzeeland ........................................................................................
