Critical Minerals Governance Risks in Africa Cases from Ghana, DRC, South Africa and Zimbabwe 202605

The governance of critical minerals across the continent is shaped by diverse factors, and the four panellists will discuss specific experiences from four countries: South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana, and Zimbabwe. Given the centrality of these resources to global energy transitions, governance mechanisms need to be strengthened across countries and throughout the continent. The panel will identify key governance risks experienced in the four countries and reflect on ways in which these challenges can be minimised or avoided. Key objectives of the panel: 1. To identify the critical minerals resource context in each country; 2. To examine governance risks in critical minerals supply chains across the four countries; and 3. To discuss ways in which these governance risks can be minimised to strengthen the governance of critical minerals on the continent, with particular reference to the four case studies.
