CRICIÚMA em SC - Muito Além da Capital do Carvão
Criciúma was a very positive surprise on our route through southern Santa Catarina. A large city with a strong industrial identity, but one that goes far beyond its title as the coal capital. Over a few days, we explored Criciúma at a leisurely pace, seeking to understand what it's like to live in the city and what it offers in terms of leisure, culture, and quality of life. Our arrival gave a good indication of what was to come. Right away, we visited Parque das Nações, a spacious, well-maintained, and vibrant area, which welcomed us with a train ride. Unfortunately, the MuZoo (Zoology Museum), located within the park, was closed on the day of our visit, but even so, the place showed why it's one of the city's main meeting points. Since Criciúma is a medium-to-large city, we chose to stay right in the center, in a strategic location to facilitate travel. After checking into the hotel, we went to enjoy the late afternoon at the Mirante Realdo Santos Guglielmi viewpoint, with an incredible view of the city. To wrap up the day, there was still time to attend the last session at the Planetarium, located inside the Albert Einstein Astronomical Park (E=mc²) — a different experience that was a pleasant surprise. The following day, we continued exploring other parks to understand if Criciúma, even with its past strongly linked to coal mining, manages to offer a good quality of life to its residents. We visited the City Hall Park, also known as Centenary Park, which has a complete infrastructure and a high-level skate park, very well used by the community. The city's history was also present in the visit to the Octávio Fontana Mining Museum, which once operated for coal extraction. An important tour to understand the role of this resource in the economic development of Criciúma and the entire southern region of Santa Catarina. To conclude our time in the city, we walked through the streets and sidewalks of the center, observing the movement, the commerce, and the rhythm of urban life on a daily basis. A simple but essential ending to feel how Criciúma functions beyond the tourist attractions. This video shows Criciúma as it truly is: a city that carries its industrial history, but also invests in public spaces, leisure, and culture. A very pleasant surprise and an important chapter in our trip through southern Santa Catarina.
